I don't want to sound like every low quote is a trap. Sometimes the cheapest option is rational: a disposable project, a short-term campaign, a non-critical application. In those cases, buy the cheap laser printer or the no-frills cutting head. But the moment your process depends on uptime, color accuracy, or repeatability, the lowest quote is usually a lie that hasn't revealed itself yet.
Also, my sample is limited to what I've seen in manufacturing and R&D. A university lab with grants for photonics research might value a coherent chameleon laser differently than a procurement manager does. Their TCO equation includes research impact, not just dollars. I can't speak to that tradeoff. I can only tell you what the spreadsheets say.
