Buying a Coherent Laser Cutter or Welder? A Cost Controller's 6-Point Checklist

If you're about to spend a serious chunk of your annual budget on a laser system, you need a checklist. I've been managing procurement for a small contract manufacturer for six years, and I've tracked over $180,000 in laser-related purchases. Step 1: Know which laser you're actually buying

People say laser like it's one product. It isn't.

  • A 100W laser engraver is for marking and engraving, not usually for cutting.

Step 2: Quote the total package, not the base machine

When comparing quotes, I don't compare machines first. I compare the full package:

  • Base system
  • Chiller or cooling

  • Installation and training
  • Shipping and rigging

In February 2025, I compared two quotes for a 100W engraving setup. The cheaper base machine was $2,100 less. Step 3: Check the service contract before you need it

Here's something vendors won't tell you: every laser will need maintenance. A Coherent laser welder is a tool with optics that degrade, consumables that wear, and software that gets updated. Ask for a written service commitment.

The value of a guaranteed turnaround isn't the speed—it's the certainty. For a production line, knowing a technician will respond in 48 hours is often worth more than a lower-priced vendor who estimates. I learned this when our engraver went down in Q3 2024. The repair was estimated at one to two weeks. Our downtime cost was about $850 per day. You can't recover that.

Ask specifically: what is the guaranteed response time for a down machine? What parts are stocked locally? Who answers the phone on a Friday afternoon? I've seen quotes that looked great until I asked those three questions.

Step 4: Count consumables and hidden fees

The machine is only the beginning. Add these to your cost model:

  • Assist gas, like nitrogen or argon
  • Nozzles, lenses, and protective windows
  • Filters and chiller water treatment
  • Laser gas or diode replacement over time
  • Calibration and alignment service

Some benchtop units are air-cooled. Higher-power systems are not. Skip the chiller and you'll shorten the laser diode's life.

If you actually came here for a home printer

Because laser is in both names, I get this a lot. The laser vs inkjet printer for home question is real, but it's a completely different product category from a Coherent laser cutter that cuts metal or a color laser printer that prints documents.

For a home office printing a few hundred pages a month, an inkjet is often cheaper upfront. A color laser printer usually has a lower cost per page and faster text printing, but toner and drum replacements can bite you if you don't print often.
